The idea for Jibbitz™ started back in 2005 when stay-at-home mom Sheri Schmelzer and her three children decided to decorate all 12 pairs of their favorite Crocs™ shoes. Working only with clay and rhinestone, Schmelzer constructed uniquely innovative charms that fit perfectly into the signature holes found on Crocs™ shoes. Convinced of the possible hit potential of the soon-to-be-named Jibbitz™ - especially when paired with Crocs™ shoes - Sheri's husband Rich secured a home equity loan and launched a small product assembly line in the basement of their Boulder, Colorado home.
The Schmelzers quickly started production on a few of their favorite Jibbitz™ designs and shared them mostly with family and friends. From there, they launched their own website and quickly became one of the most popular phenomena all over the globe. In fact, within a year, Jibbitz™ - whose name comes from Sheri's nickname of a "Flibberty-Jibbit" – were found on Crocs™ shoes worldwide and had sold over an astonishing 8 million pieces.
With such staggering success and overall popularity, Crocs™ shoes decided to officially partner with Jibbitz™ and acquired the company while keeping founders Rich and Sheri Schmelzer as President and Chief Design Officer.
